Without knowing the circumstances around this specific event, I would be appalled in whatever circumstances if poor attitude resulted in a patient being reduced to tears. There continues to be investment in training to ensure staff are equipped with communication skills, and this includes imparting bad news to patients in what will often be stressful circumstances for the patient. I hope the sick patient cited in this episode has recovered and will be able at some point to tell me more specifically about this incident so that I can take remedial action. To get in touch in the first instance, please call our Complaints Officer on 01595 743064, or email carolyn.hand@nhs.net.
