"emergency admission to hospital following adverse reaction to a prescribed drug"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

My initial care was excellent from both nursing and medical staff while being monitored and treated in A &E and CAU. However being readmitted 3 days later for further monitoring on the advice of the Doctor who was very caring I was transferred to "board" in a surgical ward B31. Once on the ward I was not spoken to or indeed looked at, at any time by the nurse in charge of my area,  only given a cup of tea by a pleasant student nurse. So none of my prescribed monitoring or tests took place! A total waste of my time and the doctor's valuable time!  I am normally a healthy person but was very unwell and extremely scared during this time but got no comfort or care from nursing staff I saw in ward B31. I am a retired nurse and I know how I would have treated my patients and it would not have been the way I was treated in ward B31!!   The Doctor and the staff of CAU were wonderful!!!!

Dear killin,

I am so sorry that your experience within ward B31 was a negative experience. As a Senior Charge Nurse it is really important that I listen and learn from your feedback and I have taken on board what you have shared with me.

I have picked up in your story that you were a ‘boarder’ in my ward, as an organisation we are moving away from this way of thinking to a more person centred approach. In ward B31 the philosophy of care is every patient should always receive gold standard care, I am disappointed this was not your experience and once again, I would like to apologise for that.

I have shared your story with my staff and would appreciate the opportunity to meet or speak with you to discuss your experience in more detail if you would find this helpful. You can contact me on-

Kind regards

Update posted by killin (the patient)

The response to my story was helpful. I have the oportunity to meet with the ward sister so hopefully other patients in the future will receive better care than I did.
