What I liked

There were some hospital staff who were friendly and helpful.

What could be improved

I felt that the majority of the time I was left to get on with things by myself, e.g looking after my newborn baby despite having a drip in my right (dominant) hand. I was also left with blood-stained sheets and pads for the whole of my two day stay. I feel I was given unnecessary treatment (a drip of antibiotics) despite the fact I had not given consent for them to put the drip in and had not been informed that they could instead have given me oral antibiotics. I also felt that my decision to discharge myself was not treated with respect. I later found that although the midwives had signed as having had conversations with me, very little had actually been discussed including the risk of infections post birth.

Dear Anonymous - I am sorry that your experience at Southmead Maternity Unit was so poor and that you felt the need to discharge yourself. I also apologise that you found the level of communication was unsatisfactory, and that you were not consulted on the placement and need for your drip.

The Trust takes all complaints seriously, and we would wish to understand more of about your time in the Unit in order to learn from this, and ensure no other patients has similar problems. I would be grateful therefore if you could send your full details and any additional concerns you to allow a full investigation to complaints@nbt.nhs.uk

I am please that you found some of the staff to be helpful and friendly and I will pass these comments on to the Maternity Unit. Childbirth should be a joyous event and I am very sorry that your experience did not reflect this.
