"Cleanliness"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / General surgery

(as a service user),

I was a patient in Forth Valley hospital ward B11 and in a shared ward.

The cleanliness of the bathroom was disgusting, the floor, the sink, the toilet. There was even dried in faeces on the floor from before I arrived and the bathroom lay like that the whole weekend!

I didn’t want to take a shower as it was so dirty and I felt cleaner not having one.

I thought cleanliness was a priority for hospitals to help prevent infections etc etc. How can a toilet in a shared ward with people in with so many conditions be left like that?

I hope this is listened to, it made me feel extremely uncomfortable when I was already feeling terrible with the reason I was in.

Dear Evelyn1264

Thank you for sharing your story with me, as Senior Charge nurse of B11 it is very important to me that patients facilities are clean and ready for use at all times I was really disappointed to read your story.

I appreciate this must have been very difficult for you and I note you felt very uncomfortable, it would be my expectation that my team would react and respond quickly however I note this is over a weekend and I am disappointed this was not responded to quickly and I am very sorry for your experience. I have asked my team to be more vigilant when assisting patients in and out of the bathrooms.

I wonder if you had the opportunity to highlight any of the issues with my team, I would always advise my patients to let us know if things were not to the high standard that we strive for to give us the opportunity to respond quickly to any issues.

I have discussed with our Serco partners who provide the cleaning services for our Hospital and they are taking your story very seriously.

I hope you feel I have listened to you and again I would like to offer my apology for you feeling uncomfortable.

Kind regards

Donna Coomes

Dear Evelyn 1264,

The infection prevention and control team work in close conjunction with both nursing staff and domestic staff to ensure that patient facilities within the hospital are clean and fit for purpose.

This is done through ad hoc visual spot checks and weekly audits of each area with anything of concern being fed back at the time, to the person in charge, with the view to this being rectified immediately.

If this bathroom area was reported to nursing/domestic staff when it was noted by yourself and no action was taken this is unacceptable. This bathroom area should be getting regularly cleaned so any dirt or debris would not be allowed to impact on the patient experience.

We all endeavour to provide a safe environment for healthcare delivery and patient safety is paramount to us. We will liaise with all of the services involved in B11 to ensure that this is an isolated incident and we appreciate you letting us know so that we can make the necessary improvements.

Thank you for your assistance in this matter and wishing you a speedy recovery.

Infection Prevention and Control Team

Thank you for contacting us with your feedback during your stay on B11. We take the standard of cleanliness extremely serious and it is a key priority for everyone here in NHS Forth Valley. At SERCO we are committed to providing the highest standards of cleanliness and are really disappointed that you were uncomfortable using the facilities however we will continue to monitor the toilets throughout the hospital

On a daily basis all areas are cleaned to the national cleaning specification which includes daily cleaning schedules which must be completed daily and a programme of audits are carried out on daily and weekly basis by both Serco and the board representatives. The outcome of these audits achieves an average monthly score of 97% within ward B11 which is reported nationally however, again we are sorry that you felt we did not meet our expectations on this occasion Out with the daily cleaning schedules we also have a rapid response team who respond to any cleaning issues reported through our helpdesk and if this issue had been reported our response times would have been a maximum of 5 minutes as per our service specification.

The SERCO team
