"Fail to provide care and timely treatment in..."

About: North Middlesex Hospital

My elderly frail relative who is a diabetic and has heart problem fell off the escalator and lacerated her rear head and brought in by the ambulance. She was assessed and has ECG and blood taken by the nurse and was told to wait in the main waiting area. She waited for more than 5 hours and started having numbness in her head, feeling sweaty and nauseated I went and ask for a vomit bowl and inquired when she will be seen. The staff looked at the screen and told me that there is another patient before her turn. We waited for another 30 minutes and I asked again and I was assued that she will be the next one on the list. Finally after 6 hours waiting she was seen by the Doctor. I told the Doctor that she was brought in by the ambulance and was asked to wait outside for 6 hours and started to complain of headache, sweaty and nauseated. The doctor himself was concerned and immediately sent for CT scan. The scan was done within 20minutes. Another 20 minutes waiting for the CT scan report before he could sutured up the wound.

From the above experience I encountered, there was no continuity in patient care when patient is admitted by ambulance. The patient was seen by a nurse and was was asked to wait and was left unattended.

Dear Anonymous,

I very sorry that your elderly relative had such a poor experience in the A&E department. We aim to provide excellent care to all of our patients and this clearly was not the case in your relatives scenario. If you wish this to be formally looked into please contact PALS northmid.pals@nhs.net
