"Camhs for my son and daughter"

About: Children and young people / Child and adolescent mental health Somerset NHS Foundation Trust / Adult community mental health

(as a relative),

Been involved with CAMHS for 4 years for my son and daughter. We found their services poor and not compassionate. We feel let down, unsupported, not received the correct support. Not listened to and judged.

Son was signed off 2 weeks before his 18th birthday and referred to talking therapies. They said his needs were too complex, referred to Adult Mental healthcare, Bamfield Unit, Minehead. He at present has a differential diagnosis of ADHD, Emotionally unstable personality traits, Anxiety with symptoms of PSTD, Childhood trauma, possible Aspergers syndrome.  Camhs said nothing.
Daughter is still under Camhs. Diagnosis unstable Emotional Personality Disorder. No support on how to deal with this. She also hears voices hallucinates/Disassociation/Depression/Anxiety/Physical pain. Treatment from Camhs is infrequent, unsupportive, daughter doesn't trust them. feels they have let her down and they don't listen. No emotional support at all. Found them rude and abrupt. She has 1 worker at present that seems a bit better but it's early days and limited.

We are sorry that your experience of CAMHS has not been a positive one and thank you for bringing this to our intention. CAMHS is currently going through a phase of service transformation and we are keen to learn from patient experiences so that patient care can improve wherever possible. In order to do this, we would need to gather more information regarding your son and daughter’s care. If you would like to discuss this further please feel free to contact the Team on 01823 368368 and a Manager will be willing to hear and investigate your concerns.

If you would prefer, you are welcome to contact the PALS team to discuss any issues on 01278 432022 or email: pals@sompar.nhs.uk. However, please be assured that your comments are being taken seriously will be raised with the CAMHS Team so that learning can occur.

Kind regards

Mark Conway
