One evening at the end of December 2018 I suddenly had an intense stomach pain. My wife phoned 999 and I was taken very promptly to the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford. Here I was scanned and assessed, and an emergency operation was carried out. The chief surgeon conducting this, Mr S Preston, had had to be contacted at his home after midnight. His opinion was that without an operation I would have had just 2 hours to live. After a 4 hour operation to remove a cancerous growth that had split open my colon and caused a massive buildup of pus and faeces in my stomach he then assessed my chances of survival at about 40%. Fortunately the skill of him and his team, coupled with following close and dedicated intensive care, enabled me to not only survive but to return home just over 4 weeks later. Here I am enjoying a slow but steady improvement to my health that I hope will eventually bring me back to near my state before the emergency.
Needless to say I am absolutely delighted with the high standard of medical treatment that I received at the Royal Surrey, and especially at the way Mr Preston's team all went out of their way to keep not only me but also my family fully informed of my progress during this difficult time. Their dedication was exceptional.
