"Robotic assisted partial nephrectomy"

About: Kent & Canterbury Hospital

It was discovered at the beginning of November during a routine ultrasound scan for something else that I had some sort of growth occurring within my left kidney. I had not been experiencing any symptoms so was quite surprised to hear this. Anyway from that moment on a whole system swung swiftly into motion from initial outpatient consultation with one of the Urology team Doctors, a CT scan for more detailed imaging and then seeing the Urology Surgeon. He explained what they had found in a relaxed and friendly manner which helped to put me at my ease in what of course can be an anxious time. The recommended course of action was a robotic assisted partial nephrectomy (removal of part of the kidney) which he explained has the advantage of maintaining a working kidney over complete removal. Anyway, with lightning speed, six days later the operation was completed and one month later I have now had my results from my surgeon informing me that the whole of the low grade tumour was successfully removed, which was of course excellent news and a big relief. So after this and having made a good physical recovery from the operation I returned to work the following day.

I can only now go onto say, how I would like to thank the surgeon for his absolute skill and professionalism, as I don’t know where we would be without people like himself and then in fact to thank the whole NHS team that was involved in my care from all the lovely staff on Clarke Ward at KCH, the Theatre team, to the CT staff at QEQM and many others too numerous to mention. So many negative stories about the NHS but I can only report a service of professionalism, dedication and excellence. Well done to all concerned!
