"My wife's broken hip on Christmas Day 2018"

About: Grantham & District Hospital / Accident and emergency Grantham & District Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Emergency Department Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Trauma and orthopaedics South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust / Emergency ambulance St Michael's Hospital / General medicine

(as a carer),

On Christmas Day my wife fell, broke her hip and was admitted to The Royal Cornwall Hospital. The ambulance response from Wadebridge was rapid and the care shown by the paramedic and his team partner was exemplary. A&E in Truro followed by admission for an operation to repair the broken hip was beyond reproach. She was admitted to the Trauma ward where her care was considerate, kind and to the very highest standards. Once able to be moved she was taken to St Michael's in Hale prior to being transferred to Lincolnshire by ambulance. Care and treatment at St Michael's  was again superb.  Grantham Hospital managed to find a bed and my wife was transferred by ambulance to the Emergency Assessment Unit where she stayed for 3 days prior to being discharged and allowed home. The ambulance crew that undertook the 400 odd miles trip just could not have been kinder or more considerate.

Too often we hear about the failings of the NHS; but this is an example of three hospitals: Royal Cornwall Truro, St Michael's and Grantham where every single aspect of medical skills, treatment of the patient and courtesy to myself could not have been to a higher standard. Wonderful NHS and thank you ALL.

Dear 'The singing shepard',

My name is Jane and I am the Clinical Matron for the Emergency Department (A&E) at Treliske. I would like to thank you for sharing your wife's story on the Care Opinion website; .

I am presuming you were down on holiday from Grantham for the Christmas period when this happened which was very unfortunate for all, but I am glad that we were able to provide your wife with the best possible care right from the Ambulance service, ED, the Trauma ward and finally at St Michaels Hospital.

As you say, we often hear about the negative side to the NHS so it is fantastic when we hear of a patient journey that from start to finish exemplifies what the NHS and RCHT aspire to achieve.

I hope that your wife is making a good recovery.

Kind Regards

Jane

Dear The singing shepherd,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story and I hope your wife is recovering well.

It is always rewarding to hear stories of how our staff are delivering care and support to patients and those around them when they need it most.

We would be happy to share your story with the ambulance staff involved in this instance, however, to do so we will need some specific information. If you would like us to do this, please may I ask you to contact us on either plaudits@swast.nhs.uk or 01392 261 534 and a member of the Patient Engagement Team will be happy to help you further.

Thank you, again, for taking the time to provide us with feedback.

Kind regards,

Sharifa
