When I phoned my dad he sounded breathless to the extent that I felt I needed to see him to check he was okay. When I got to his house he was struggling for breath, I called the emergency ambulance for help. The ambulance crew arrived very quickly and went straight on to assessing my dad, giving him oxygen and carrying out tests on his oxygen levels. They felt there was an urgent need to transfer his to Southmead Hospital for further tests as he was at risk of respiratory arrest.
My special thanks go to James and Kirk who made this call and effectively saved his life. The younger paramedic was a student who must have been quite apprehensive dealing with a frail main in a distressed condition but he was very calm. It was not just what they did but how they did everything that was so appreciated. They went to great lengths to make my dad comfortable in difficult circumstances.
At the hospital he was taken straight to A&E where the staff were very attentive and thorough, my thanks to Heather, Ian and Dr Alison. Nebulisers, steroids and antibiotics were given straight away, a scan revealed only 30% lung function. My dad was admitted to a holding ward and then moved to Ward 31 for acute respiratory patients.
I should add that I was in the holding ward with my dad for 48 hours when his condition was serious, the staff not only looked after my dad they also took excellent care of me. I am very grateful for their care and kindness.
