"Why have an adolescent ward?"

About: John Radcliffe Hospital

I have been admitted to the JR twice following a peads appointment during these past 4 days

We were told to come to one of the adult wards, baring in mind I haven’t even sat my GCSES yet. I just don’t get the point in having an adolescent ward if over 15’s have to be admitted to adults?

I am quite frankly traumatised from the experience, being next to a screaming lady with dementia, I was in tears.

Our local hospital allows 16-18 year old on the peads wards but I just don’t get why the JR doesn’t? ive now missed school and the adult wards were unable to give me any education for my GCSES which are in 4-5 months.

I kindly ask you to at least consider allowing older adolescents (16-18) onto your adolescent ward. Im a patient already at the children’s hospital! I’m absolutely emotionally drained, my mum stated she wouldn’t have been able to be in that environment, let alone a teenager having too.

The staff in the adult wards thought I was too young to be there, but were super kind! I’m not in any way faulting the adult wards, they were very sensitive towards the situation and very efficient. I just ask that this is taken into consideration, it has a huge effect in our mental health being in that environment.

Thank you to the staff who were so kind :)
