"Told me there was nothing more they could do for me"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Ear, Nose & Throat

(as the patient),

I was misdiagnosed by my GP surgery 4 times before having to insist on a referral to ENT which was at Crosshouse Hospital Kilmarnock.

I was given an appointment a 8-10 weeks later and saw a particular Doctor who was excellent and took the time to listen to my symptoms and made a physical examination on my nasal passage and ear canal diagnosing a Eustachian Tube Dysfunction prescribing a steroid nasal drop with a follow up appointment to be made 2 months later with him.

When booking the appointment on the way-out the secretary said the Dr I had seen was not be available for two and a half months and would this be ok, I said yes and left with the medication which was used religiously as prescribed.   My symptoms improved slightly over the time before my next appointment but not significantly.

I returned for my follow up appointment and was taken a back when I entered the room not to find the Doctor I was to see but another Doctor who appeared not to have made any effort to read my notes asked me what was wrong with me.  The doctor made what I felt was a half hearted examination and told me there was nothing more they could do for me. Said they'd give me a prescription nasal spray I could try for 6 months. I asked if I would then come back to see them and the reply was very short saying they can't cure everything and this was the best they could do?!

I left and asked the secretary if it would be possible to see the first doctor I was given a number to call to see if I could arrange this which I rang and was told it would be requested to a senior member of the department, the answer was no.   I was told I could complain about the treatment I received by the second Dr which I duly did. I received a phone call to tell me that my complaint was not being taken any further as the senior member of the department agreed with that Dr's assessment, I was given some information about the lack of care but still no further appointment? ?

My symptoms are still continuing, I think if I had seen my original Dr on my follow up appointment I would be on the road to recovery as they actually seemed to have a duty of care to patients.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.
