"Urgent breast clinic referral"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / General Medicine General practices in Ayrshire & Arran

(as a service user),

So in mid December I went to doctors found a lump on my breast to be told by the gp she would send an urgent referral would be seen with a week to 2 weeks and there were clinics and both Ayr and Kilmarnock.

So 2 weeks came and went anxiety through the roof I have 4 children youngest just turned 2. Did some Google research to find Scotland waiting times are 28 days hmmm not what to stated. So left it the 28days phoned referral line to be told clinics are in high demand could be 6 weeks well low and behold 6 weeks on Friday and I still don't have an appointment..

Phoned the referral line again on Monday to be told I've been unlucky because I've been caught in the Xmas back log and I should be in the next batch.... Batch? ? ? ? No further forward with an appointment can't sleep stressed out worried while still trying to be a good mum to 4 gorgeous little people.

Feel like I've been totally mislead firstly by the gp according to referral line there is no clinic at Ayr and the waiting times have never been a week to 2 weeks secondly to be told I would be in the next batch is wrong I am a human being not a machine. I have contacted my local councillor regarding waiting times it's wrong. More money needs to be invested in this services theses are woman's lifes.

Dear Vicki4,

I'm so sorry to hear about your experience, and I completely understand how anxious you must be after finding a breast lump, especially a longer than usual wait. It's certainly our aim to see all patients referred in urgently within 2-3 weeks, but at the moment this is proving challenging because of an increased number of referrals into the breast service, and currently a consultant vacancy. We do whatever we can to put on additional clinics for both mammograms and consultant appointments, and I do hope we're back to our desired 2 week wait very soon. I wonder if you would like to give me a call and we can have a proper chat about it? I can then check your details and confirm where we are with your appointment. My number is 01563 827176. Again I'm really sorry that you've had a long wait and it's been so stressful for you.

Best wishes

Tracy
