I was sent to A&E by my GP and diagnosed with pneumonia which came as a shock. The care I received by all the staff including the NWAS crew and A&E staff was outstanding. Although the unit was busy I did not have too long a wait and began having investigations and treatment within a few hours. I was put on a corridor at some point for a few hours but this was fine and any staff that passed by kept checking if I was OK.
The Consultant kept me informed about the test results and at all times I knew what was going to happen next. A lovely volunteer offered me a sandwich and drink and I was offered an extra blanket when on the corridor. What was so noticeable was the manner in which the staff went about their work, with smiles and efficiency and always giving time to answer questions asked by patient's relatives. Most staff introduced themselves and at handover the Sister in charge spoke to all the patients making them aware she was there if they had any questions. In the early hours of the morning I was found a bed on the Acute Medical Unit and taken to a single bay which was very welcome. The Sister introduced herself and brought me a hot cup of tea which was wonderful. The next day I was moved to a short stay ward and again I was lucky enough to be put in a single bay. Every staff member who came into the room always asked if I needed anything and no matter how very busy they were had time for a few minutes chat. The Doctors took time to ask questions and listen to my answers.
My experience as patient was very reassuring and I can only offer my sincere gratitude for all the care and compassion I received. When I was discharged a few days later I was taken to the Discharge Lounge and spent a few hours before my medication was dispensed. I was made comfortable and offered food and a couple of hot drinks. The caring did not stop until I finally went home.
"The caring did not stop until I finally went home."
