I was admitted as an emergency late evening of 14.12.2018. I had had surgery in London a week previously, and had developed an internal leak from the bowel. I was resuscitated in A and E, X rayed, and admitted to Rayne Ward..
The following day, I had a scan which revealed the leak, and in the evening of 15.12 through into early morning of 16 .12 I had a difficult emergency operation. Following that, I spent two days in HDU, and then a further 12 days in Rayne Ward.. As I understand it, there was widespread inflammation in the abdominal cavity.. I am myself medically qualified, and I understand the severity of that situation.Good and timely surgical intervention was necessary, and I was fortunate that the consultant and his team provided that; fortunate too that the nursing care afterwards was sound, reliable and kind. Over the days of recovery, I was very weak, but well supported.
I was discharged on 27.12.18, and have since been recovering, slowly, at home, supported by my GP Practice, friends and family. There will be, in due course, and Outpatient follow up appointment. I dislike melodrama, but I am in no doubt that this prompt and necessary surgical treatment saved my life..
I should add that I now have an ileostomy (in addition to a pre existing urostomy) and have had patient advice and support from the Stoma Care Nurses.
Broomfield is my local District General Hospital.I am pleased to know thwt it did so well (and this is not the first time) I would rate this episode as deserving five stars on the part of everyone who cared for me.
