"Rude and ill mannered staff member."

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Maternity care Crosshouse Hospital / Stroke Care

(as the patient),

One night in early January 2019 I called the maternity unit at 1am whilst in the middle of a panic attack. The call was answered by a very rude member of staff. I explained I had a stroke at 21 weeks pregnant and I hadn't heard anything from anyone and was really panicking that something could be wrong with my baby. This staff member answered well your not going to hear anything at this time of night are you. I was struggling to breathe which was obvious and mentioned again that id suffered a stroke and was scared it could happen again and they said in a very abrupt manner that they had heard me the first time. I asked for their name and said I would call back in the morning and speak to someone a bit more sympathetic to which they replied yes you do that. I have never felt so let down by a health professional. I then spoke with a nurse from the stroke unit who was lovely. She assured me I was just in the middle of a panic attack as she could tell straight away by the way I was breathing. I called  the maternity unit in the morning to complain about the staff member in the maternity ward but was advised I had to follow hospital protocol and I would be contacted by someone at the hospital. I am still waiting 10 days later to hear from someone.

Dear Unhappy88,

I am sorry to hear about the difficult time you have faced. Having a stroke is such a frightening experience and I can only imagine how worrying for this to occur during your pregnancy.

It must have been very alarming to have had a panic attack at night. I am glad you were able to speak to one of the staff in the stroke unit and found this to be beneficial. If you feel you would like further support from the stroke team please let me know and I will arrange this. You can contact me on 01563 825904 or email me at christine.somerville@aaaht.scot.nhs.uk.

Best wishes for your recovery,

Christine
