"Hard working staff"

About: Borders General Hospital / Acute Assessment Unit

(as the patient),

Despite a rumpus caused by a patient on the medical assessment ward @ Borders General Hospital the staff, though 2 members down throughout the night because the troublesome person required them to stay with him for the safety of all on the ward, carried on professionally doing their job in a calm & caring manner having to work so much harder to cover for this disturbance.  It is shocking that this is being allowed to happen.

Dear Constance1

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your experience in the medical assessment unit. I hope that you are now recouperating after your admission. Patients do become distressed during admissions to hospital for a wide variety of reasons and require lots of support to make sure they are safe and also that their fellow patients like yourself can be cared for in a safe environment. As you saw this does have an impact on the staff on duty, its good to know that you felt that the staff remained calm and in control, although very busy.

Witnessing this can be very difficult especially when you are unwell, I'd be really happy if you would like to talk to me about this directly. I can be contacted on 01896 826000

Dear Constance1

Thank you for taking the time to let us know of your experience in our ward.

Unfortunately there are many reasons for patients becoming noisy, distressed or disruptive and it can be difficult to ensure the peace and quiet of the ward some nights, but I am glad that you were assured of your care and safety despite the level of activity on the ward and the impact on staff of a patient requiring additional support. The staff will be pleased to hear this positive feedback about their care and professionalism - I will ensure that it is shared with them.

I'm sorry that you did experience such a difficult situation whilst a patient in our care and like Sarah, I would also be more than happy to discuss any points with you if you wanted to contact me via 01896 826206.

I hope that you are now feeling better after your time in hospital.

Best wishes

Lynne
