"Unprofessional conversations"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Day Medicine

(as a service user),

I attended the Day medicine unit at FVRH for my regular IV infusion, it’s such a friendly place and the care is very good.

There are usually Student Nurses on placement, the conversation between some of them ( in earshot of patients ) was I felt unprofessional at times. A student described their placement in the Day Medicine Unit as “ cushtdy “, going onto say that in the main student nurses didn’t like the wards as they were “ heavy “ with “ lots of personal care to be done especially in the morning, it’s brutal “. To me that language demonstrates no person centredness, no understanding that it’s a privilege to assist patients and the difference that personal care can make to how we are feeling and our wellbeing.

They had time to stand and chat but showed no interest in my treatment or my underlying disease which is rare and complex. In fact in the 3 years I have been attending the Day Medicine Unit only 1 student nurse has ever shown interest in me as a patient and person, every other interaction has been task orientated including the request to do “ obs “ ( what does that mean to a lay person )?

Patients have functioning ears! One of these days these students may need care and help. I fully support the fact that nursing is now a degree profession, that doesn’t mean that the art of nursing, caring for your patients, is now obsolete. The lack of clinical curiosity, which a degree should foster, is very sad.

My intention is not to get anyone into trouble but to highlight that patients appreciate holistic care that meets all our needs, even the “ heavy “ ones.

Dear Immunosupressed,

Please find below a response from Gail Hutchings who is the Senior Charge Nurse (SCN) for Day Medicine.

Thank you for taking the time to post feedback of your recent experience in Day Medicine

As SCN it is really important to have opportunities to listen and learn from patient's and relatives who have received care within the department. I felt very disappointed and sad to hear that your experience this time was different from other visits. It's great to be able to share with you the actions I have taken following your feedback.

I have taken the opportunity for all my team to learn from your experience, I have met with all staff including the students who are currently on placement in Day Medicine. At the meeting I read out your Care Opinion posting and asked all staff to reflect on it. I also reinforced the privileged position we are in as nurses and reminded staff of the professionalism required and expected from us all.

We have also been in touch with the University making sure they get the opportunity to hear your feedback, this will enable them to use your feedback as a learning opportunity for all students

with thanks

Gail

Gail,

Thank you for the considered response, I especially appreciate that you have been in touch with the University and I hope they will use my story to challenge attitudes and encourage reflection.

The incident didn’t detract from the high quality of care I always receive from your staff and I would be grateful if you could tell them so.

Part of the reason for posting my story was to highlight the wonderful learning opportunities for student nurses that I feel exists within Day Medicine and my sadness that many don’t realise this. You have wonderfully knowledgable staff, patients with long standing chronic diseases who are experts in managing them and treatments/ infusions that are seldom seen elsewhere.

My regular infusions have made such as difference to my quality of life, thank you to you and your staff, and the wonderful set up in Day Medicine, for facilitating this.
