"Experience of Out of Hours Hamilton service/ Wishaw General"

About: Lanarkshire Community Services / GP Out of Hours service University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department University Hospital Wishaw / General Medicine (Wards 5 & 8)

(as a relative),

I would like to thank Out of hours service in Hamilton for their excellent service provided last night for my mum.  She required nebulised, oxygen & had a uti.  Linda & Dr Hawthorn were very attentive and courteous in delivering mums care as we awaited an ambulance.

Unfortunately If a similar level of care had been provided in Wishaw general Ambulatory Care Ward two nights prior to this, (when she was admitted via gp referral with a uti where they refused to treat her and sent her home as the Doctor said she was asymptotic due to crp in bloods levels not being elevated!!!)  We wouldn’t have had to take up 5 hours of the services time on a Saturday which then resulted in my mother being admitted to Wishaw General for treatment for a uti anyway.
This concerns me as mum has no mental capacity to describe symptoms of uti due to her vascular dementia. We were also not allowed to be present in Wishaw for her assessment so had no idea what they asked her regarding symptoms in Ambulatory Care Ward.
However she is currently in Emergency Care Unit Wishaw receiving the correct treatment.

Dear Sange,

I am sorry to hear that your mother has been unwell over the past while and am disapppointed and concerned to read that her experience while attending as a GP referral to UHW Ambulatory Emergency Care Unit was not of a standard that you or I as the Senior Nurse would expect.

UHW has signed up to Johns Campaign which allows patients who present with a cognition concern that allows carers 24 hour access and should be involved in all aspects in the patients care particularly assessment so I am extremely concerned this did not occur. I am also sorry that this did not occur.

I would like to further look into this and provide you with a more targeted response. I would be grateful if you could contact our patient affairs manager either by e mail to Yvonne.ross@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk or by telephone on 01698 366558

I am glad that your mother has settled within the ECU and hope that she is comfortable and making good progress.

Best wishes

Andy

Dear Sange,

Thank you for your feedback on the positive experience your mum received in the out of hours service.

I will pass you comments onto Dr Hathorn and Linda (ANP) and the wider out of hours team as it is always nice to hear back about the good service provided.

I hope your mum is now on the road to recovery.
