"Grans COPD"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Acute assessment unit

(as a relative),

My gran has COPD and gets a lot of infections especially in winter. Last week she couldn't breathe and we called an ambulance. One came quickly and they gave her a nebuliser and she felt better. But then later on it got much worse again and we had to phone another one and they said she should go to hospital because her levels were dangerously low.

We got there at 4 in the morning and it was totally full. My gran was in a bed in a room but there was people lying down right outside the rooms as well, and the nurses were taking turns putting them in different rooms for treatment and things.

We had 2 nurses and they were nice, gran actually wrote their names down but lost it. The young one asked her what her oxygen should be which I thought she should know. But they gave her a nebuliser and oxygen and she felt a bit better and went to sleep. Which was good because we never saw a doctor until the actual morning. There is no internet and your not aloud to charge your phone which is wrong I think. Especially if your there for hours like we were.

The nurse at the till bit was right in front of me and kept saying -well this is rubbish to the ambulance men that brought people in. I think its not peoples fault there unwell and nobody wants to be in there. And also even though you apparently cant get internet she was on her phone all the time right in front of us. I thought that was rude but the rest were nice and polite.

The doctor was really nice and after a bit with no oxygen she said we could go home with tablets. She and our nurses and the morning nurses were polite and gave us tea and things and me a blanket. My gran has had them lots of times before but one nurse said to stay sitting up tall for an hour after you take them and that actually helped and even our own doctor didnt know that. Because she is allergic to penicillin and can only get 2 types.

She is better now and I think larbert hospital is mostly really good thanks.

Many thanks for your comments, we are keen to learn from patients experience while in our department, I will certainly pass on your helpful comments.

We are working with the wider hospital team to allow patients and relatives to have access to wifi, I will check out the ability to charge phones and ensure that is clear for all concerned.

I hope your gran is now improving.
