I went to A&E/Urgent care centre at approximately 8am this morning with what I thought might have been a broken thumb. I have previously had a broken hand on the same hand, and had to have surgery to have a plate put in it in 2017. The symptoms seemed very similar, in that I had no pain when my hand was not in use, fair amount of swelling and restriction of movement, but not as much pain as you would expect. In fact in 2017 I was convinced my hand was not broken until I saw the X-ray. So having had similar experience, and also a concern for the plate already in my hand, I thought it best to get it checked out. All staff were polite and friendly, but the initial assessor, advised I would see a doctor or ENP and likely have an X-ray. However the ENP decided my thumb was not broken and I just pulled the muscle in my hand, I really don’t understand how she can say that without an X-ray! Then I had what I was told was a splint fitted, but all I have is layers of elastopath wrapped around my thumb. I just feel the treatment is a little inadequate and would have liked the piece of mind of an X-ray to confirm I have no fracture. I don’t understand how any medical professional can categorically say a bone is not broken without an X-ray.
