"After care"

About: Liverpool Womens Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

After an emergency c section being high risk due to having antiphosplipid syndrome and being on daily fragmin injections and asprin  the after care I received was shocking!

I was left alone on a ward with no one in it. Still feeling dizzy an light headed 10hrs after my section and worried I may have bleeding or a clot  I buzzed for someone to check my blood pressure 4hrs it took and 3 different people to come in an told me someone will come an do it now. I buzzed another time cos I need the toilet but felt faint every time I stood up but no one came, so with being alone on a ward an scared incase I did faint I propped the ward door open an left the toilet door open so I could shout for help if I needed it.

Considering I felt so Ill and was classed as high risk by 2 professors at the hospital, one said only in an emergency should I have a section due to the high risk. of surgery and Antiphosplipid syndrome  this care was not good enough.

I was given pain killers around 3am and at 6. 30 I think they brought more in only that I was counting the hours to get more I asked should I be taking these now cos I had some at 3 and the nurse said prob not and theyd check and disappeared then when I was due more  I had to keep buzzing and was told we will bring them now but eneded uo. waiting over 3 hrs when I was due to get them. I did complain to the midwife on duty who apologised. When I asked to go home she said I need to get on top of pain management 1st so I replied I'd be better looked after at home.

As a mother who has suffered 4 miscarriages and has a potentially deadly illness I don't feel I received the level of care I needed at all never mind the bare basic checks even when I'm telling nurses I don't right I'm worried to wait 4 hrs is not acceptable only when I cried an pointed out my illness did some one take my blood pressure. I left the hospital really upset couldn't wait to get home even now 5month later I get upset thinking about the way I was left.

On the plus side the induction team were amazing couldn't do enough for me and always checked me when I had concerns about babies movement or my blood pressure.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. At the Liverpool Women's NHS Foundation Trust we strive to give the very best care to mothers and babies. I am sorry you felt we did not provide the level of care that you expected. This is not the standard of care that I would expect from the maternity ward. If you wish to discuss this further please contact our PALS team, either by email pals@lwh.nhs.uk or call on 0151 702 4353
