"Chronic illness management"

About: Colchester General Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

i have been attending Colchester hospitals for 35 years. I had my three children at the old maternity home. Unfortunately I developed Rheumatoid Arthritis in 1999. This disease has for me been aggressive and chronic. RA or efffects of continuous medications have affected many areas of my body mainly most joints some needing operations. It also has affected my eyes, hearing, skin, teeth, stomach, back. This in turn has therefore meant over the years, many departments have been involved in my care from rheumatology, orthopaedic, podiatry, audiology, dermatology, orthodontist, eye clinic, Physio therapy, hydrotherapy, pain management, etc. I therefore feel privileged and qualified to make a review on this hospital. I can honestly say every department has really worked hard to diagnose and then help me improve my health and quality of life. Yes there have been long waiting times, but all hospitals experience this and it is a political cause. Yes there have been individual that at times I have found to maybe not have quite the ‘charm’ or personality that benefits their position however I have never been poorly treated, or disregarded concerning my illness. Whether I have had bloods taken, X-rays, scans, physiotherapy, orthotic shoe inserts as well as major surgery, long term or short term stay and day surgery I have always experienced a willingness by the staff to help and improve things for me. With the right questions being asked and the correct respect and politeness being given on both sides I feel that my many visits have had positive interactions and outcomes. Fortunately I have been able to see the same Dr in the Rheumatology Department for the 19 years of diagnosis.

I have therefore benefitted from continuity and consistency of care by a Dr who has listened and helped me live my life as full as I can with this insidious disease.

I have appreciated having a Dr who listens to me and discusses with me how to move forward. It is knowing that using his professional skills that I trust him to give me with his best care. He is ably supported by his secretary who also has supported and listened when I have needed urgent appointments or needed to contact The Dr. So thank you to all the staff who work for the NHS andColchester Hospital for all you have done for me over all these years.

Thank you for leaving your comments, to make sure they reach the correct people I will forward them onto the Matrons for the relevant areas. I am sorry that occasionally you had to wait for your treatment and we do try to keep these to a minimum. I am pleased to hear that you have seen been assigned the same doctor who has been working with you to enable you to move forward and live your life as fully as possible. Many thanks
