"Review of my Colonoscopy"

About: Royal Bournemouth General Hospital

i Have had previous colonoscopies at other hospitals so luckily knew what to expect.

The care given by the nursing staff and porters was very kind and helpful as you would hope for. Also the Doctor I saw in clinic could not have been kinder and really listened to my problems before arranging for this test and allowing me to be am inpatient the night before in order to manage the prep because of the problems I have.

The doctor who performed the actual colonoscopy had a very poor bedside manner and seemed to take umbrage that I refused sedation as had never needed it before, but when offered it I used the Entenox p r n.

He barely addressed me , did the initial digital rectal exam without warning me, and the whole procedure felt quite rough, for want of a better word. I felt I had to drag out of him any comment on what we were seeing on the screen.

I was obviously extremely relieved nothing was found at the time, but am still suffering the effects of the colonoscopy two weeks later.

Dear ‘LJS’

Thank you for taking the time to tell us of your recent experience in the Endoscopy Unit and we thank you for noting the care given by the Clinic doctor, nursing staff and porters.

We were however concerned to hear about your experience during the actual procedure and the poor interaction between yourself and the endoscopist. Your comment was sent to the sister who has asked me to share her response with you:

“Please accept our sincere apologies that you felt the care you received was poor during your procedure. This is not the experience we want our patients to have whist they are in our department.

Due to the anonymity of the comment the department are unable to feed this back to the individual endoscopist that carried out this procedure.

However this will be discussed at our departmental meetings and shared amongst all staff as feedback”.

If you would like us to go further than a general staff reminder then we would need more detail from you which you could provide to our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 01202 704886 or pals@rbch.nhs.uk who will then liaise with the Endoscopy Sister.

Once again we apologise for this poor experience and hope it will not deter you in the future.

Regards

Patient Engagement Team
