"This is not an NHS walk in centre - it is fior..."

About: Altrincham Hospital

We were seeking an NHS walkin centre as my son is very unwell wtih a gastric flu like virus. We consulted the website and it indicated that some minor illnesses gastric infections and respiratory infections could be treated at the centre. We travelled and I already paid for parking to discover that we were able to have our needs met I now have to try and find something else for my son at this point but I’ve wasted time money and energy. Furthermore there are no GPs here.

We are very sorry to receive your comment via the NHS website about your experiences at Altrincham Minor Injuries Unit and please accept our apologies for the delay in responding to you. Mrs Kirrane, Manager for Trafford Urgent Care and Altrincham Minor Injuries Unit is sorry that it was not possible to examine your son and for the distress this caused you.

Mrs Kirrane recognises that this must have been an extremely anxious time for you; however it was not appropriate for the staff at the unit to assess your son. Mrs Kirrane has explained that the unit at Altrincham General Hospital is staffed by experienced emergency nurse practitioners trained to assess and treat a wide range of minor injuries including broken limbs, simple wounds, bites, minor burns, cuts and lacerations. Management of minor illness is not within the scope of practice of the practitioners.

We sincerely hope that your son has made a full recovery.

We have investigated your report that you were directed to the Minor Injuries Unit following your search on the internet for a Walk In Centre.

We were able to replicate a search for Walk In Centres and indeed were directed to a page on the NHS Choices site, which listed Altrincham Hospital alongside Trafford Hospital and Manchester Royal Infirmary.

We have contacted NHS England about the information displayed on their site in an effort to have it amended to avoid similar incidents.

Please see the response below:

Thank you for contacting the NHS Website Service Desk

When you search for Minor Injury Unit, Urgent Care Centre, Walk In centre individually they all appear on the below link together under the blue icon. This is done so people don't overlook other services that would meet their needs. So their search should not be so precise.

The service type which is down on the file is the name which comes through on NHS Choices so the commissioner has determined the service type. We have no control over this as we are only the data presenter.
