I visited Scarborough Hospital this week for a colonoscopy following a recent irregular bowel cancer strip test.
I was very well received at the reception desk and waited in a nice and comfortable waiting area, with toilet facilties directly alongside.
I was first interviewed by a nurse who checked my medical history and explained the procedure to be undertaken that morning and asked if I had any questions.
Various options for possible pain relief during the procedure were explained and I made the decision not to take any special measures.
I was then shown into a private cubicle and asked to undress and put on a hospital gown and a special undergarment to maintain privacy.
I was then taken to the recovery area and waited to be called.
Within a few minutes I was taken into the colonoscopy suite and asked to lay on the bed and introduced to the five people who were going to be present at the procedure.
The medical staff were really good and put me at ease and we chatted throughout the procedure.
It was very interesting to watch the colonoscopy on the colour monitor screen alongside the bed and the Specialist Consultant explained what was happening and visible on the monitor screen.
Things went well and the procedure was soon complete.
I was then taken back into the recovery area and offered a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit.
My blood pressure was taken and monitored by the wonderful nursing staff for a period of time.
I was then told that I could leave and a final medical report was taken by a nurse.
They also explained that I would receive a telephone call the next day to ensure all was well and that I was not having any problems.
Overall, it was a good and interesting experience and the medical and nursing staff could not have been better.
