"IUD coil fitting - most painful experience"

About: St Mary's Hospital (HQ) (London)

I made an appointment online to get a hormone-free coil fitted this morning. This is the first time I have ever considered this as a form of contraception without hormones. It was possibly the most painful experience I have ever had in that part of my body - and my pain threshold is normally very high. It took not only one, but two nurses numerous attempts to try and place different sized coils inside me and I had the most excruciating pain while they were doing so. I didn't know I had to take painkillers before hand so I felt everything. I cannot complain about the nurses as their bedside manner was excellent throughout the process and they were extremely nice to me in these vulnerable moments. I didn't get the coil fitted in the end, after about 45 minutes, it was too painful. I was then given contraceptive pills as an alternative. Luckily, I didn't take this pill right away, as when I got back to work I read through the leaflet to find it said 'do not take if you're allergic to peanuts' - I am severely allergic to peanuts and I told the nurse about this at the beginning of my appointment. So not only did I experience terrible physical pain, I was mistakenly given a potentially life-threatening alternative afterwards. I don't ever want to experience that again, and certainly will not consider getting the coil at any other clinic. So now I'm still without contraception, I have period pains, and I'm also bleeding.
