"newly diagnosed crohns disease"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Acute Medical Initial Assessment Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Endoscopy Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Gastroenterology (Stomach and Gut)

(as a service user),

I was admitted to AMIA from my GP with rectal bleeding and loose stools for 4 weeks. After 48 hours in short stay I received a flexi sig, I was really scared. Whilst on short stay because I was completely independant and required no assistance I felt as though the staff didn't really talk to me. They only had to collect my stool samples which is embarrassing enough for a 24 year old without being made to feel as though its a really disgusting job. There was some miscommunication as to when i would be getting my flexi sig and it kept getting pushed back and my symptoms and bleeding were getting worse. However, on my second night on short stay a lovely staff nurse called Treasure was looking after me. She was the first one to ask how my bowel movements were, how much fresh blood and how often, and how much pain i was in. She checked on me every few hours and asked what pain relief I needed. She made me feel very safe and that they were going to get my scope done as soon as possible as she told me she was going to speak to the doctor about it.

After my flexi-sig a diagnosis of crohns was made and I was transferred to ward 104 Digestive disorders - where i have been for the last 12 days. This is the main reason I am writing this CareOpinion - the GI team have been phenomenal and absolute credit to both the NHS an themselves. From the domestics to the consultants I feel as though I have received the best care possible. No one would pass by my door without asking how I was. I was constantly checked on and they made me feel so comfortable and able to ask for help. I was in tears a few times throughout my stay just because I felt so overwhelmed but there was always someone who came in and comforted me. They were so on point with all my medications, obs and the whole team always knew my plan for that coming day. I ended up getting a further two sigmoidoscopes done, I was so anxious for the second one because of the pain and discomfort caused by the initial scope but the nurse in the endoscopy suite was so calming and held my hand the whole time. Despite being delighted to be discharged I will definitely miss the GI team in ARI.

Another  thing I think is so important to mention is how amazing I found the open visiting system. Im not sure how I would have coped without it. Having family and friends by my side made my whole hospital experience a thousand times better. There was no pressure for them to leave and it made me feel  so much stronger being surrounded by the people I love.

Dear newdxIBD

Many thanks for taking the time to share your recent experience across a few of the wards with ARI.

I am disappointed to read that whilst in ward 103 initially the staff didn't engage with you and there were miscommunication issues and having been a Senior Charge Nurse for a number of years within Gastroenterology, I understand the issues and embarrassment some patients feel when asked to leave stool samples and am sorry that the team initially didn't reassure you in regards to this vital aspect of your treatment and care.

I am however delighted that Treasure was able to restore that person centred care that we strive to provide to all our patients when she cared for you during your second nights stay. I will ensure that your kind comments are shared directly with her.

In regards to the ongoing care in ward 104, I am delighted to read that you describe the care you received from this team as phenomenal and a credit to the NHS. I am also pleased that your experience during your further sigmoidoscopies was much improved due to the calming support you were shown by the Endoscopy team. Both these teams will be so pleased to read that their delivery of care had such a positive impact on you during your stay in their care.

We are very proud within NHS Grampian of our person centred visiting and your comments highlight the importance of this and the impact it has for our patients and their families.

I appreciate that having a new diagnosis of Crohns Disease must be a difficult time for you but I hope that you are recovering well as home.

With best wishes

Fiona Robertson
