"Critical Care"

About: Lister Hospital

One of our residents in a supported living service is currently in critical care . I have found all staff to be very respectful, especially as he has complex needs and as one his support workers , I would often need to explain these. However I just wish the same respect could have been shown towards another patient . I believe this patient may have had Dementia making it difficult for him to understand that he had a catheter in and was using assistance pads . He was frequently becoming distressed as he believed he needed help as he thought he was soiling himself .I understand that the nurses have lots of people to help and there was no need for his alarm , however the way one nurse spoke to the gentleman was in excusable. She often sounded agressive saying comments like “Well you will have to wait !” “There’s nothing wrong with you !” “What now?!” The other nurses were much better and were firm in that he would need to wait but in a respectful tone and reassuring him. I would also like to mention that the same nurse walked off when I was speaking to her about a machine monitoring our residents heart rate. Also that when showing as advised herself and another nurse his manual handling techniques she was not at all friendly and openly yawned . I have had a very good experience will all other staff but cannot ignore this persons behaviour.
