"Unacceptable waiting times"

About: William Harvey Hospital (Ashford) / Accident and emergency

My 16 year old daughter was admitted to A&E at 17:30 on 25/09/2018 with severe back pain, vomiting and fever after visiting both her GP and the out of hours GP on the previous day. She was quickly assessed and transferred to a very busy overcrowded area where her bloods were taken and a drip set up in the "treatment area" to control her pain, manage her fluids and deliver antibiotics. I was impressed by the initial care she received from the caring but clearly overstretched doctors and nurses. However, she remained in the treatment room, sitting on an uncomfortable chair, until 03:00 the following morning, unable to even snooze because the room was overcrowded and there was nowhere to lay down. Apparently the computer system crashed, so the medical team finally arrived at approx 03:00 to assess her, revealing that she indeed had a high level of infection and that she should be admitted..... but there were no adult beds. Having only just turned 16 we asked whether a bed would be available on the paediatric ward and were relieved to hear that they could take her. Finally settled at 04:00 I was able to stay with my daughter and was very happy with the excellent care from the nurses in Padua ward. However..... the following day the consultant refused to treat her on the children's ward (because she was not on his adult ward) and we waited until 16:00 before the nurses could persuade him to come, so no progress was made, no scans/tests took place and we spent night 2 still unsure of her diagnosis. On 27/09/18 we were again unsure whether the consultant would visit her on Padua ward, with arguments between the nurses and medical team regarding where she should be treated. Finally she was diagnosed with a kidney infection and discharged with antibiotics at 20:00 with instructions to return a week later for a review. My husband and daughter arrived today for the review (an open clinic where you have no appointment time) at 08:30 and her blood was quickly taken for analysis. I was expecting my husband and daughter to be at work and school respectively by lunchtime, when I called to find out how they'd got on....... but they were still waiting for the blood test results! In fact, they waited for over 5 hours, when they were again told that the computer system had crashed and the results were unavailable! This is surely an unacceptable waiting time, a disorganized system and an incredible drain on the NHS budget? In addition, my husband paid over £6 to park and had to buy lunch at the hospital, all for the sake of a blood test! The doctor later phoned us to give us the good news that the blood test was clear..... why could this not be the norm, rather that patients waiting all day for results on the premises?
