"shocking service from a NHS hospital"

About: Sevenoaks Hospital

phoned up sevenoaks hospital as friend had extreme pain from nose could see redness swelling and white lumps in nose was told to come down as this could be treated there , was told would be seen by a doctor over phone.

arrived 30 min later was checked in saw a nurse which told us that there was nothing really wrong just a small sinus infection but we explained it has been like this for 3 months and was sent home with nothing but advice to sniff steam with menthol, i felt this was unacceptable as on the leaflet i was given it said if you experience symptoms for more than 10 days to see a doctor as you will need antibiotics i had already suffered for 3 months and wanted it sorted, after 2 hours had to drive 1 hour down to hastings walk in doctors to get a second opinion and glad i did as i saw a nurse there and needed amoxicillin due to a bad sinus infection no thanks to sevenoaks hospital.

Dear Darren

We are very sorry that you were unhappy with the care your friend received at Sevenoaks Minor Injuries Unit and that you felt you needed to drive them to Hastings for a second opinion. We hope your friend is feeling much better now. On reading your review, we immediately sought advice from the clinical team leader at the Unit and she provided the following information:

At Sevenoaks MIU we try to give the most up to date advice and follow the NICE guidelines. The guidelines for sinusitis are:

• Consider no antibiotic prescription or a back-up antibiotic prescription (see the recommendations on Antibiotic choice), taking account of:

o Evidence that antibiotics make little difference to how long symptoms last, or the proportion of people with improved symptoms.

o Withholding antibiotics is unlikely to lead to complications.

o Possible adverse effects, particularly diarrhoea and nausea.

o Factors that might make a bacterial cause more likely.

She believes that both the centre at Hastings and our MIU gave you the correct treatment, even though it was different.

If you would like to discuss this in more detail with the clinical team leader, please do not hesitate to call the PALS team (details below) and ask for the service to make contact with you.

Best wishes
