"I was absolutely mortified"

About: Gartnavel General Hospital / Xrays and Scans

(as the patient),

I had to go to Gartnavel for a CD colonography. My normal hospital is RAH.

I was already anxious. I had had colonoscopy in rah, but colon too twisty.

First off, the staff were lovely, if not very young. It seems it used to be band 6 job, now band 5s do it. But staff very caring. But you have to get changed, in tiny changing room, with curtain and men sitting right outside. The curtain didn't even close right! Absolutely no privacy or dignity. I had to take everything off. Hated it!

Then in for ct. They pump air inside your colon. Some folk might be fine... But for me, it was agony! I have never experienced such pain! I cried whole way through. My gut felt it was been twisted and about to explode!

No patient nowadays should have to go through a procedure, in such pain!!! There should have been sedation! I guess it's cheaper not to.

I will never put myself through that again! Then, you have to walk through busy waiting area, in your gown and tear stained face. To get to toilet. I was absolutely mortified! I'm never going back there!

Dear Sad1

I am dismayed to read about experience at Gartnavel General Hospital, this is not the standard of care that we strive to deliver to our patients and I would like to apologise for this. Patients should have their privacy and dignity maintained and I am sorry that this did not happen. I am sorry about the pain you experienced during your procedure.

We would like to look into this further, can you please email me at Nicole.McInally@ggc.scot.nhs.uk with your name, date of birth or CHI number? In the meantime I will share your post with the General Manager responsible for the service to make them aware of your experience.

Kind Regards

Nicole

Dear Sad1

I am very sorry about your experience and for the upset and distress that this caused.

We are aware that the patient facilities in the waiting area are not ideal and do not provide sufficient privacy for our patients. For that reason, we are redesigning the CT area to coincide with new CT scanners being installed next year. The redesign will provide a CT suite with patient preparation room and changing areas to provide greater privacy for our patients.

In your post you mention having sedation, the reason that we do not provide sedation is that during the procedure, we need to give patients instructions. For example, lie on your side, lie on your back, turn over etc. Sometimes this is to ensure that the air is where we want it to be. I am sorry that you found the procedure so painful. I would like to reassure you that all CT staff at Gartnavel General Hospital are trained to perform CT colons (this includes band 5’s and 6’s).

We are pleased that you appreciated the care and attention you received in the Department.

Kind Regards

Lynn Ross
