"Disastrous"

About: Addenbrooke's Hospital / General surgery

My mother, who's blind and 85 years old, was admitted for a routine laparoscopic rectopexy under the colorectal team. Her colon was 'torn', she collapsed, was transfused, had two further ops on consecutive days to investigate and repair. She was given a stoma. She was in Intensive Care for 11 days and on a normal ward for a further 4 weeks. Communication between team members and me was paltry to non-existent. My mother's blindness was not taken into account with respect to communicating with her or to giving her information. The apparent nonchalance, arrogance, disregard and lack of communication were breathtaking..

Thank you for letting us know about your mother's operations and care at Addenbrooke's Hospital. I am very sorry to hear that you are unhappy about the level of communication between team members and with you and your mother, especially in view of her visual impairment, and that you considered the staff to have a poor attitude. We would like to be able to investigate your concerns and respond to you and your mother personally, and I would be grateful if you could contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) and complaints department on 01223 216756 or email pals@addenbrookes.nhs.uk so that we can obtain some further details.

Once again, I am sorry to learn of you and your mother's disappointment with the care provided.

Kind regards

Head of Patient Experience.
