"Accessibility to parking for the disabled"

About: Outwood Park Medical Centre

I have been attending this GP for over 18 years and wouldn’t use any other but as we all know the amount of patients has increased tenfold since I joined. The issue I have is disabled spaces:-

I’m sure you would agree there simply aren’t enough. The markings are almost gone plus there is abuse of these spaces by patients chemist customers and delivery vehicles. I understand that these issues are to be addressed but I have to say making more spaces isn’t enough - it needs to be made clear that disable spaces are for the blue badge holders not elderly. I’m certainly not suggesting they are any more able bodied than I am but no badge no space - also people waiting in their car in these spaces - the idea of a disabled space is that if the person who is in receipt of the blue badge is driving they need disabled spaces not people who own a badge but are driven into a disabled space because if that is the case they could drop the disable person off near to the entrance and sit in a non-disabled space to drive up to the patient when they finish - this rule is clearly stated within the paperwork sent with a blue badge - if I cannot get a disabled space I have to use a space which is on the end of a row or used the space that is no longer a space due to the disable ramp - I have to have my door wide open in order to get in and out of my car so no spaces mean I really struggle; this all needs to be addressed. One other point is there are far too many islands with trees or shrubs which look nice but aren’t necessary. A sign needs to be clear marked on a post in front of each disabled space clearly stating blue badge holders only and no delivery drivers to use these spaces.

Dear patient

Thank you for taking the time to tell us of your experience of parking in disabled bays at the surgery and I am sorry if you have had difficulty accessing these.

The markings over the entire car park have indeed worn and the practice has already arranged for these to be repainted in Autumn 2018. I agree that the signage could be improved and we will look to install a post in front of each of the disabled parking bays to state that these are disabled parking bays only.

We are unable to police the car park so we are reliant on patients and visitors respecting the disabled bays, as there is ample parking a little further from the main entrance.

Thank you for bringing your concerns to my attention.

James Day

Practice Manager
