"Waiting times at beatson"

About: Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre

(as a relative),

My sister has been attending the beatson all this week for her first cycle of chemo. Each day she has attended allocated appointments on time but waited anything from 3 hours to 5 hours for treatment. Why tell someone to attend at 9am and not take them till 2pm. SHe is in a lot of pain and is exhausted by time shes called for chemo. Today she has been in since 9am and is still there now 5pm. we do not stay in glasgow and its a 2 hour round trip back and forth. im sure we are not the only family to experience this.

Dear Hyacinth46

Thank you for getting touch.

I am sorry to read about the delays your Sister has been experiencing at the Beatson.

Unfortunately, there can be delays with treatment and this can be for a number of reasons. Before receiving chemotherapy we may need to check a person’s blood count and we then need to wait for the results of this before proceeding with treatment. Sometimes patients may need to see a doctor before starting their treatment. It can also take time to make up the chemotherapy treatment, and this may not be made up until the doctor or nurse confirms that any test results are satisfactory.

I appreciate how exhausting this must be for your Sister and we do try to keep waiting times to a minimum. If your Sister is in pain at the clinic please tell the staff and we will try to make her as comfortable as possible.

If you would like to discuss this further can you please contact me at Nicole.McInally@ggc.scot.nhs.uk

Please pass on my best wishes to your Sister.

Kind Regards

Nicole
