"Outstanding service at City Hospital for my hip..."

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - City Campus / Trauma and orthopaedics

I am delighted with the treatment and care I received when I attended NUH City Hospital Orthopaedic Centre. I was located in Harvey 1 following surgery to replace my hip.

All staff I met from the Admissions reception staff, porters, catering, senior, junior nursing staff health care assistants staff and of course the doctors, surgeons and consultants showed remarkable levels of kindness, care, compassion, competence and skill.

Staff listened to my requests and concerns. They provided supportive advice, assistance and where possible left decisions to me as the patient.

This hospital puts the patients at the heart of everything they do. They make time to have conversations some very mundane and humorous in order to support the emotional health and well being of patients. The volunteers help a great deal in this respect.

There are comprehensive handovers between shifts. Also a set of systems which ensure consistent standards of nursing and care.

I had a total left hip replacement. It seems like it was a success and

I spent a few days learning how to move my left leg and become mobile again with the assistance of the Physio’s at the City Hospital. The handover of information to my GP was excellent.

In my opinion this great service would be even better if:

patients whose operations are taking place later in the day have access to water or fluids up to 2 hours prior to surgery. I had my last drink at 6am but did not have surgery until 3.30pm. It left me feeling dehydrated having been refused a drink at around 11.30am.

Every single member of staff that treated me introduced themselves by name without prompting. ( It was only a small minority of staff who did not do this)

the up to date names of staff working each section of the ward are displayed.

I think that the nursing and care staff can stretched sometimes but they deal with it stoically and show tremendous patience.

Overall, I am very grateful for the consistently outstanding quality of treatment and care offered by this wonderful department. My profound thanks to all.

Thank you for taking the time to write and share your experience of having your hip replacement at City Hospital. It is great to read such kind words about my colleagues on Harvey 1 and in Elective Orthopaedic Surgery and I have shared this with them. Your suggestions for how that experience could be improved are particularly valuable and can be learned from so we can make necessary improvements for future patients, and I am grateful to you for raising them.

Kind regards

Louise Challans
