My wife was sent to Wharncliffe Bay 3 after minor issues with her twin pregnancy and at first, having been at home myself, I was concerned to learn my wife didn't feel she had been given sufficient food (she was transferred around 5.45pm so it was past the mealtimes but she could only have sandwiches, and not hot food) and her medicines hadn't been brought over to her after being prescribed in labour ward.
When I got there around 10.30pm, I spoke to a midwife/nurse called Lisa who was very accommodating in helping me give food for my wife and her general help over the next day or so was pleasant and helpful.
The next day, we were very happy with the help given by midwife Emily who was pleasant and tried to - amidst being pulled in other directions by the rest of the patients - keep us informed. Her general attitude was brilliant, we felt. Our monitoring checks were done at the times they said, and so were the blood pressure tests etc.
Our only disappointment was the length it took to be discharged. We were expecting the midwife to administer a steroid injection at 5.30pm, for which we expected to be discharged approximately around an hour later - we felt it was a reasonable time in line with what we only had left to do. However, the injection was administered at around 6.20pm, and we were told that it would be a case of completing notes and we could then go. At this stage, we weren't' kept informed so at 7pm, there was a staff handover that took an hour and it was a further 25minutes. Emily came to inform us she had to personally go and see a doctor to write the discharge confirmation in our notes, before Lisa, who had began her nightshift, gave our notes and allowed us to go.
On this final point, we would have been more relaxed had we simply been given a rough timescale of when we would be able to go. Not having that gave us extra tension especially considering we'd spent Eid day on hospital and were looking forward to going home quickly to try to enjoy the celebrations.
Overall, we were happy with the attitude of staff especially Lisa and Emily but had we had that communication on discharge, it would have been a 10/10 experience!
"Excellent care except for long discharge wait"
