"Cleanliness"

About: Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre / Ward B4

(as the patient),

Although the care is second to none the same cannot be said for cleanliness.

I have recently been in ward 4 and in the wet room/toilet there is mould growing in and around the drain and on grab handles. The person cleaning this ward is in and out in a flash and I cleaned handles etc before using facilities.

Rails above beds were never cleaned and everything else gets a quick going over with wipes sometimes. Used towels are left overnight often and the shower chairs are disgusting. Myself and most other patients are immune compromised due to having chemotherapy treatment and this is a huge worry.

Dear Donka

Thank you for getting in touch.

I am disappointed that standards of cleanliness were not as they should have been during your hospital stay. We take patients concerns very seriously and we can only improve if we know what is going wrong from a patient’s perspective.

Your post will be shared with my colleagues from Facilities and the staff at the Beatson for appropriate action.

I am pleased that you found the care second to none.

Take Care

Nicole

Update posted by Donka (the patient)

Dear Nicole

Thank you for your response

I would like to mention that all medical staff washed hands and used anti bacterial hand gel as directed and in no way compromised patient health.

I just could not believe how little was being done to clean patient areas including lockers etc.

Such a wonderful caring environment spoiled by lack of interest re maintaining/cleaning patient areas.

Dear Donka

I am sorry that you found the cleanliness in the ward below standard. I would like to reassure you that we are very committed to ensuring that all our wards are clean and safe. We regularly carry out cleanliness audits and Ward B4 has achieved satisfactory levels of cleanliness (above 95%).

The Senior Domestic Supervisor has visited the ward to check the cleanliness standards and found them to be acceptable. We have ensured that all the drain covers and shower chairs have been thoroughly scrubbed. We will also make sure that towels are not left in the toilets.

If you have any concerns about the cleanliness whilst in hospital please speak to the staff so that we can rectify these immediately.

Kind Regards

Elaine Burt
