"My mother"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Older people's healthcare

(as a relative),

My mother was admitted after a fall to Nottingham’s QMC. Great service to start with and then she was admitted to the Lynn Jarret ward. The care there was adequate although not brilliant and at 1 o clock in the morning on the second night of her stay, 3 nurses woke her up and said we need to move you to another ward. Fair enough there is a bed shortage but this can be a very frightening experience for a lady in her eighties. However they moved her to a new ward and things settled down.

2 days later whilst she was eating her breakfast the nurse came over and said you can go home now the ambulance is waiting, sat her in a wheelchair and sent her off. Still in her night clothes, the same night clothes she had been wearing in arrival 5 days earlier, her clean supply still in the bag at the side of her. I read so much about #endpjparalysis. Perhaps they should practice what they preach and not send pensioners home unwashed and in their nighties.

I am grateful that you have taken the time to get in touch with us. Thank you. I’m sorry to read that your mother was moved in the middle of the night. This is a poor experience for our patients and something we try to avoid wherever possible. We have also very clearly fallen short on the planning of your mother’s discharge from our care. Your experience shows that we have more work to do to embed ‘End PJ Paralysis’ and this is an area we continue to prioritise across our hospitals. We would like to discuss further, please contact our patient experience team on 0115 924 9924 ext 66623 or email QMC.PET@nuh.nhs.uk and we will look into your concerns and individual case in greater detail.

We look forward to hearing from you.
