"Not allowed relatives while waiting for theatre"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Day Surgery

(as the patient),

I was recently a patient in Day Surgery at Wishaw General for a laparoscopy, under Dr Jain’s care.  A special thanks to Vicky and Amanda who looked after me so well, especially when I was recovering to come home, which took longer than expected and they had to stay on past their shift finishing time.

I was quite surprised and disappointed that I wasn’t allowed a relative to sit with me while I was waiting to go to theatre. I was fairly anxious about having this operation carried out and I had asked if my Dad could stay with me for a short while but was told that relatives were not allowed to do this.  I was really disappointed in this as I had been in Hairmyres Day Surgery last year and I was allowed to have a relative with me – it really helped calm me down and made me feel really cared for. Obviously , I am better now and managed but I was particularly anxious pre theatre and I feel that having my Dad there for me would have helped to reduce this anxiety and worry.
