About: Springfield Hospital

This follows up my review in April of my experience in 2017 as a self-pay patient. 7 weeks ago I had a second TKR at Springfield as an NHS patient. Was very happy with attention and attitude of nursing and physio staff, who were caring and conscientious. Anaesthetist managed epidural efficiently, though did not explain effects of femoral block, which meant I was worried when I could not stand up the day after surgery. Impressed that surgeon came to see me on the Saturday afternoon and physios available every day. Discharge was well-organised (I was the last patient left in the whole hospital as it was a Bank Holiday - what a waste of resources!) and I was given everything I needed, including follow-up appointments. Only slight negatives - there seems no sensible reason for relatives to be prevented from staying with patients while they wait to go to theatre (previous management comment relating to lack of space in Day Surgery Unit did not apply and I was left waiting alone in my room for about 3 hours - this did not happen when I was a self-pay patient) nor of having restricted visiting hours for NHS patients, unless it is to persuade privately-funded patients that they have some advantage or appease the insurance companies?. Also room cleaning was rather cursory - mop pushed round central part of floor, avoiding furniture, and nothing moved before wet wipe cursorily flapped round clear surfaces of furniture. Could no see what they did in the bathroom, but it didn't take very long! Overall, though, a better experience than last time.
