"Very unhappy with the care that I received"

About: Chard Hospital

This morning (Wednesday 11th July) I visited Chard hospital in regards to my left shoulder.

When I got there I was informed that there was only one nurse practitioner on shift which I instantly thought was unacceptable. After 1 hour and 45 minutes of waiting I had to step outside to contact my work place letting them know there was a possibility I would be late due to the long wait. Whilst I was on the phone I was approached in a very rude and abrupt manner by the nurse saying "you coming or what".

I ended my call and followed the Nurse in. As any Nurse/Doctor does she began the small talk to put patients at ease followed by a brief conversation in regards to the pain etc in my shoulder. Not at any point did she touch or even look to assess my shoulder in anyway, just advised me physiotherapy might be whats needed and then told me I could leave.

I believe I did not receive the correct care and attention that I should have done, nor did I get any answers or solutions to the injury I needed checked. Whilst I understand our NHS is very stretched, overworked and underpaid, patients still need to be assessed in the correct way. I feel like I wasted nearly 2 hours to walk away no wiser to the problem let alone the correct treatment for the injury. For all she could have known I could broken/fractured or seriously injured my left shoulder in another way and yet still sent me away regardless of this.

Not only did I leave none the wiser, still in a tremendous amount of pain but also extremely frustrated and unhappy with the care that I was provided.

Hello,

I'm really sorry that you had a poor experience at Chard Hospital Minor Injury Unit yesterday morning.

I've passed this to the service manager who is looking into this and will provide you with some more information shortly. I will post that here as soon as I receive it.

Once again, I'm very sorry for the way you were treated and for how this made you feel.

Thank you for taking the time to feed this back to us, so that we can look into this.

Kind regards,

LUCY

Hello,

I'm just leaving a further response, now that we have had some time to look into the concerns you've flagged up here.

Mike Paynter, Consultant Nurse, has looked into the care you received at Chard MIU and would like to apologise that you did not have a good experience. He would be very happy to personally meet with you to talk about this further, if that would be helpful. You can arrange this by emailing me at lucy.nicholls@sompar.nhs.uk or calling or texting 079 202 666 92, and I will arrange this for you. We would also be very happy to arrange a second opinion and another examination for you if this would be helpful.

Unfortunately we do sometimes only have one nurse pratitioner working. The NHS has significant staff shortages and this does mean that sometimes the waits are longer than we would like. I'm really sorry that this added to your frustration.

Please do get in touch if you would like us to help further. We do appreciate you taking the time to leave this feedback and once again, I'm sorry that your visit was so frustrating.

Kind regards, LUCY
