"Treatment of my Daughter"

About: Russells Hall Hospital / Respiratory medicine

(as a parent/guardian),

My Daughter was admitted to Russell Hall hospital recently after she had had a CT scan and a Doctor we saw was concerned about Her breathing. She was on Acute Medical Unit, a doctor woke her up at 3am to tell her the result of the scan, yes, 3am!   She has lung cancer, although I had suspected it, she did not, it was a shock for Her. Me, or one of her children should have been with Her! How insensitive was that doctor, whose name She cannot remember.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are very sorry to hear about your daughters treatment during her recent stay in the Acute Medical Unit at Russells Hall Hospital.

We aim to deliver the highest standards of care to all of our patients and are always disappointed when this may not have been the case.

If you haven’t done so already, please could you contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on free phone 0800 0730510 or email dgft.pals@nhs.net who can arrange for your daughters care to be looked into.

We would welcome the opportunity to look into the points you have made relating to your daughters care to understand what gave rise to the issues.

Thank you for your quick response. As you can imagine, when I sent my email I was extremely angry. For my daughter to be told the devastating news at 3am that she had cancer without any family to support her was so upsetting for both of us, especially as she had NO idea she was so ill.

Having calmed down, and having time to process the diagnosis, also the excellent care she has received from Doctors and nurses on Ward C5,I do wish to withdraw my complaint.

Hopefully the Doctor concerned won't make the same mistake again as I do believe he was spoken to.
