I asked to be fitted with a contraceptive implant at the end of last week. I was told by the extremely helpful and friendly receptionist that I would be put on a waiting list for this and would be contacted by the women's health team. When I rang early this week to chase this up I spoke to another extremely helpful receptionist, who told me that I was on the list, but could not give me any idea of when I would be called - whether it would take months, weeks or days. There is no phone number available for the women's health team, so it's possible that if I miss their call I won't be able to return it. In the meantime I have been prescribed the pill, an option I don't want to have to take, but have little choice at the moment.
This barrier to contraception is deeply worrying, and will be particularly problematic for younger or vulnerable women. I am shocked that this is the way this issue is administered.
