"Care does not just need to be medical"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Ear, Nose & Throat

(as the patient),

I was recently admitted to Ward 9 due to breathing difficulties, I was there for about a week and received good care from the nursing staff and doctors. In the small four bed bay there was an very upsetting incident with another patient one night.

The following morning an auxiliary nurse was seeing to me, we were just chatting, and they were asking how I was, I was telling them about various visitors. A care assistant was also in the bay. All of a sudden the charge nurse was at the entrance of the bay saying they wanted to speak to the care assistant and auxiliary nurse - very abrupt, wanted to speak to them straight away, not even after they had finished what they were doing. I was very taken aback, I would not speak to a young child like that let alone order adults around in that way.

I saw them taking in the office. When the auxiliary returned I asked them what that was all about and was told that they had been told to stop talking. I was very upset with what had happened in the night and needed to talk, not necessarily about that but anything to help to come to terms with experience.

Care does not just need to be medical, the staff may be used to such experiences but most people are not and need to talk.

Dear Indusjn78

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback on the care opinion website, all feedback is important to us and we use this to help us monitor if we are achieving the high standards we expect from our staff. We work closely to core values and expect that all staff work to these whether it is with patients or other staff members. I am sorry to hear about your experience whilst in ward 9 and I would like to look into this further, please could you contact our patient affairs department on 01355 585325 to provide more information that will allow me to do this. I am happy that you also experienced good care from the nursing staff and doctors and I will feed this back to the team.

I hope you are recovering well from your illness and recent stay in hospital

Best Wishes

Kirsty
