"Student nurse treated all patients with dignity and care"

About: Borders General Hospital / Planned Surgical Admissions Unit

(as the patient),

Over the winter period I was admitted to busy ward 7 for a short stay after my operation.

The ward was a very busy environment with a range of patients. In the room I stayed there was around six ladies. The ward was short staffed and extremely busy.  At times asking for help was a challenge as you were aware of how busy the staff were and did not want to be an inconvenience. A couple of days into my stay and a few patients changes within the room I was fed up and ready to go home to my children and husband.

A student nurse who came on shift that day made my time in hospital bearable and allowed me to stay and recover. Alanna treated myself and each patient in the room with dignity and care and regardless of how busy or chaotic the ward was she was patient and spent her time. Another patient in the room was having to consider care instead of going home something that was upsetting for her and us to hear and witness. The doctor who spoke to her about this issue showed no compassion or care surround the situation. Alana recognised the lady to be overwhelmed and talked to her like a human. Something the doctor had lacked. She treated each one of us in the kindest manner and cared In the busiest situations. The days she was not in the ward were challenging. I can only hope she is able to receive this and understand the impact she had on my road to recovery.
I would also like to thank the junior Dr’s who were on shift over my time and all the staff who helped me over my period of illness. I would be greatful if this could be passed on to those concerned.

Dear patientpostop

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your story about your experience in Ward 7 at the Borders General Hospital following an operation. I apologise that we have not replied to your story sooner.

It was great to hear that you received such great care and compassion from Student Nurse Alanna and I can confirm that your story has been shared with the ward staff who looked after you. Ward 7 also proudly display all the stories they have had shared on Care Opinion within the ward area and I have added your story to their display.

Getting feedback directly from patients does help us ensure we are getting things right or gives us the opportunity to make things better. We are therefore grateful to you for sharing the details of your experience and highlighting the great care that Alanna provided, not just to yourself but also the other patient who was given upsetting news from a doctor. I am glad she was there to comfort and reassure that patient.

I hope you are recovering well from your operation and thank you again for using Care Opinion to provide us with your feedback.

Best wishes,
Karen
