"Emergency admission following blood tests."

About: Royal Preston Hospital / Diabetic medicine

(as the patient),

I would like to share the story about my recent health scare and how the prompt and professional action of the staff at The Royal Preston Hospital could have saved my life.

I attended the hospital blood clinic at 10.30 one morning in May this year on the advice of my GP after feeling rather unwell for a few days.

At 1030pm that same day I received a phone call from the hospital advising me to come to the A&E Department as my blood sugar levels were sky high and I was in need of urgent medical attention.

My husband took me by car and from the moment I was taken through to a cubicle my condition of DKA was quickly identified and I was transferred to a medical area and staff quickly began the treatment for my condition. The nursing staff in A&E were so reassuring and respectful of the shock I was feeling in that situation. They put me at my ease, calmly explaining each part of the treatment and nothing was too much trouble even though they were working in a very busy department.

Once stabilised I was transferred to a bed on EDU to continue my drip treatment until a bed became available on the diabetic ward. The staff in this department (in particular a young man in a blue uniform with glasses) were so kind and considerate and bearing in mind I was a newly diagnosed diabetic - they gave me encouragement and kept my spirits up in what was a rather overwhelming situation.

Once a bed became available I was transferred to Ward 18 which is a dedicated diabetic ward. I cannot praise highly enough the wonderful staff on this ward - from the consultant and her team, admin staff, staff nurses, nurses to auxiliary and student nurses and cleaning staff. Everyone was so kind and friendly and willing to help - I felt so safe and well cared for throughout my stay. A particular mention to the young female nurse in navy with glasses who made time for a chat and a reassuring "Sunday" hug - just when I needed it the most. They gave me the confidence to come to terms with what is essentially a life changing condition and a positive can do attitude that has helped me to deal with the new routines now in my life.

My heart felt thanks go to the dedicated staff  at The Royal Preston Hospital for the excellent medical treatment and care that I received over that week.  Top quality care in a hospital to be proud of!

This is a true pleasure to read, it makes us all feel immensely proud to work for an organisation where patients receive the kind of care and attention we would all wish for our friends and loved ones.

We hope you are feeling more confident now with your condition.

The teams on Emergency Department, EDU and ward 18 will be very touched to read your kind words when we share this with them today,

Best wishes
