"Lack of staff"

About: Scarborough General Hospital / Accident and emergency

I was in A and E with my little girl last week. We had been there for 9 HOURS before we saw a doctor. Initially I called 111 and they sent us to A and E with a couple of symptoms where meningitis could have been possible. The staff were rushed off their feet. The nurses and healthcare people tried their hardest but with only 1 paediatric doctor to the hospital. It was extremely stressful without having to wait 9 hours. Although the staff were friendly, and trying their best, my child wasn't observed as regularly as she should have been. I didn't feel as though my child was safe and was seriously considering taking her to a different hospital, but as she seemed too ill for me to make that decision, we were stuck there. Waiting to see a paediatric doctor for 9 hours is totally unacceptable. I understand cuts have been made but 9 hours for a child is not good enough. I am going to be writing letters to Jeremy Hunt and Theresa May about the NHS Crisis. However, thankyou to the staff for trying your best.

Firstly I'm sorry it has taken so long to respond to this comment, which has only just come to my attention.

I am also incredibly sorry for the experience you and your daughter had in A&E recently. Waiting 9 hours in any situation is not good but with a poorly child and the stresses that brings, it must have been truly awful and actually quite scary for you both. I do apologise.

If you would like to speak to someone about this, please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 01904 726262. They will be able to contact the Emergency Department and ask them to look into your daughter's care in more detail. They may also be able to advise why there appears to have been a shortage of staff on that night, and any steps they are taking to make sure this is not the usual situation for people.

I do hope your daughter is well now. Best wishes to you both.
