"Day Surgery"

About: Bassetlaw Hospital / General surgery

On the 30/05/2018 I was admitted for a operation to drain my Anul fistula. The ward was clean. The ward is mixed male and female. I was placed next to a man who had surgery, granted the curtain was closed but I am aware that when I turned the blankets exposed me somewhat and I was under some sedation so my inhibitions where down. I feel I should have been placed in a private room.

My needs where taken care of but I got the impression the nurses where not impressed that I was given a spinal block which meant as far as they where concerned I was bed blocking. General anaesthetic makes me very sick and takes me longer to recover from , whereas spinal block does not. The staff could not get me away quick enough. I had just had surgery I was unwell. I knew the staff wanted me to leave so much so i even attempted to walk and get up out of bed. I failed but thankfully I did not fall I fell onto my face on the bed. So no injuries. All in all i felt like i was a burden.

Thank you for your comments regarding your recent experience of the Day Surgery Unit at Bassetlaw Hospital.

I am so sorry to learn that there are aspects of your care that you believe were not of the standard that you had the right to expect and that you did not feel welcome on the unit, for which I would like to apologise. I would like to reassure you that staff on the Day Surgery Unit do value the patients in their care and that patient experience is very important to them, therefore it is very disappointing that this was not evident to you.

Although the Day Surgery Unit is a mixed sex unit, same sex guidelines do exist and are in place to ensure that men and women are not cared for in close proximity to each other and you also had a right to expect this.

Having reviewed the patients that were admitted to the Day Surgery Unit on the 30 May I am unable to explain why you were cared for next to a patient of the opposite sex and can confirm that this should not have occurred, and for this I apologise.

Your comments have been shared with the team and they have all been reminded about the eliminating mixed sex accommodation policy and the principles it is based on.

If you would like to discuss your concerns in more detail this can be arranged by contacting Sister Underwood on Tel: 01909 572560.
