"Review of DSEU"

About: Tameside General Hospital / General surgery

I visited my GP with a troublesome hernia, and he referred me to TGH.

I was contacted promptly by one particular doctor's team and was invited to a consultation on 23rd April. This particular doctor examined me, explaining options, procedures, risks and benefits. I was so impressed by the manner in which this was done. I was part of the decision making process. I wasn’t talked down to by the Consultant or the team. They have great people skills. It inspired great confidence.

I was subsequently contacted by the team and invited to a pre-op appointment on 18/5. The following day I received a date for the surgery - 23/5/18. On arrival I was dealt with promptly and courteously, and a nurse was assigned to look after me. The anaesthetist briefed me and made sure I was aware of her role in the operation. Finally this particular doctor visited me with a colleague, told me exactly what he was going to do, and reiterated the procedures, risks and benefits. Once again he oozed confidence and professionalism, made me feel at ease, and reinforced my confidence in him.

Shortly afterwards I was taken down for the procedure. Staff in the operating suite got me ready, made sure I was comfortable, and the next thing I was waking up.

Once back on the ward the nurses sprung into action. They were attentive, courteous, professional, efficient, compassionate, and had a wicked sense of humour. It was a bit like flying business class - I got the feeling they were there just for me. I recovered very quickly, helped along the way with plenty of water, endless cups of tea, and the most welcome slices of toast I can ever remember. I was assessed, dressed, packed, and home for 7:30pm.

It’s a month to the day since I had my first contact with this fantastic team and it’s job done. This is our real NHS and woe betide anyone that tries to take it away from us!
